We’re not a hotel so we don’t have a lot of guest accommodation on site here at the venue. We have our fabulous honeymoon cottage of course – there are not many venues where you get your own house, all to yourself and designed exclusively for newly weds. In case you need a reminder this is the cottage: We have a huge amount of accommodation nearby for your wedding guests to make their own choice. From top of the range country house hotels to boutique B&B’s through to self-catering and camping – there’s something nearby to suit all budgets. So when we found out that the lovely Bryony & Bertie who own Cider House B&B, (one of the only luxury B&B’s in the heart of a National Trust historic property) have added a couple of super-luxe shepherd’s huts to their accommodation, we wanted to know more. Bryony & Bertie believe in providing the best of the … Continue reading

Take a few minutes to watch this 4.5 min film which beautifully captures the family wedding Johanna and Andy hosted here back in June this year. She does not look to me like a woman who got no sleep the night before the wedding due to a teething baby… Click here and here for more mini wedding films at Ever After by Baxter + Ted. The lovely S took time out and had a little R&R in the honeymoon cottage between viewings this weekend. What a cosy place even if I say so myself! Here’s just a peek courtesy of one of our lovely photographers Marc Wilson. The honeymoon cottage at Ever After has two floors with a kitchen and bathroom on the ground floor and then upstairs our gorgeous vaulted ceiling living area with mini salon for bridal hair and make up and extra sleeping for bridesmaids the night before the wedding… and then our spectacular main bedroom with private balcony over looking the gardens with adjoining luxury bathroom with a 2 person bath, walk in shower and crystal chandelier. Fancy waking up to this on your first day as a newly married couple…? Take a look at how to have your wedding here in the heart of Dartmoor at Ever After. Seeing Amy & James’s wedding recently featured in Wed Devon magazine (see my previous post here) got me thinking about all the different places we have here at Ever After for photos and I started looking at how different photographers have their own take on the same location. I looked at some of our woodland couple shots taken here in Grenofen Woods and I realised you get not just those gorgeous shots by our Dartmoor river or in the trees (which I’m sure you’ll agree are epic!) but the shots of walking to the location and such cute pics of a bride in wellies. This is definitely a reminder that if you want those woodland wedding photos, do come prepared and bring wellies as there are a few little streams in the woods which add to the magical feel of the woodland but are definitely not suitable for your prized wedding Choos… Here we have Amy & James stood … Continue reading

Last winter the lovely S and I decided to create a new feature at the venue. The venue has always been located right on the banks of the river Walkham but the previous owners had planted what is now a 20 ft plus screen of rhodedendrons and other trees which totally obscured the view of the river. It had always seemed a shame not to be able to enjoy this unique resource but it took S and I some time to figure out how to open up access to the river and maintain the screen. We thought we’d just create a narrow path on the river bank so that couples and their guests could actually see the river. What started out as a little 3 week job turned into a mammoth 4 month landscaping project with diggers, chainsaws, several tons of stone collected from our garden and a lot of mud. S spent most of the winter stood in the … Continue reading
We’re thrilled that a new mini hotel has opened up here in Tavistock. It’s the Tavistock House Hotel and we’ve added it straight on to our accommodation list. Of course it helps that we had a heads up on this new facility from Tony at Rockmount B&B in Tavistock as he’s related to Bradley, one half of the couple who bought and painstakingly renovated the Tavistock House Hotel. This is a family owned Grade II Listed Townhouse in the middle of Tavistock. The hotel is newly opened and features individually designed rooms with a contemporary feel. I popped down last week to take a look for myself and meet Bradley, one of the owners. Over a pot of tea and fab freshly made scones he told me about his life’s work in hotels and his dream to create his own small quality town hotel. As you can see from these photos, he’s definitely achieved that! All the rooms … Continue reading
I may be biased but I think Devon is the most beautiful county in the country. I was born in Devon and 9 years ago I moved back when I met the lovely S. We’ve been settled in Lower Grenofen for 10 years this year and we got married here in 2012 which is how the whole wedding business began after people started encouraging us to share this lovely place. I lived in London for 18 years so moving to the country was a big culture shock – ‘what do you mean the dry cleaning will be ready in 2 weeks? 2 WEEKS?!’ But Devon forces you to slow down and smell the primroses. I remember when I used to see a patch of primroses on a weekend away from London I was always thrilled. This month in the garden they are literally too numerous to count and I’m no less thrilled. I have to look harder for … Continue reading
I had a meeting last week with the super knowledgeable Catherine Cheek from Devon based wine merchants Christopher Piper Wines. Over a cup of builders tea Catherine made suggestions for wedding reception drinks that are a little bit different which is what we like to offer. Her first suggestion was blushing bubbles using a Chase Raspberry Liqueur .which is made by Chase, the UK’s only single estate distillery founded by farmer William Chase in 2008 and made from fresh locally sourced raspberries and Chase fine English potato vodka giving it a ‘pure, luxurious quality.’ Served in champagne flutes and topped with an edible organic flower from Maddocks Organics Flower Farm, what a great way to start your English summer garden wedding. Another suggestion is ‘West Country Pimms’ made with Kingston Black which is a blend of cider brandy and the juice of one of the finest and rarest of vintage cider apples. This legend of the West Country apple orchards creates … Continue reading
I saw today that Claire at English Wedding.com featured a post written by Gabrielle of Blue Bouquet Bride on what essential questions couples need to ask before booking their wedding venue. So I thought I’d put Ever After to the English Wedding blog venue test and see how we fare on their questions…. 1. Is this the type of venue I’m looking for? (marquee, castle, hotel etc..) If you’ve always dreamed of getting married in an ancient castle, you’re unlikely to fall in love with a remote field where you have to provide your own marquee and everything that goes in it. Sure, think laterally but looking at lots of different types of venue is unlikely to help you narrow things down, do the work on the type of venue before booking an appointment to view. 2. How many guests can it hold? We make it clear our maximum number of guests is 120. But we still … Continue reading
I love weddings, that’s why I love my job… And yes I love all the wedding details, fabulous food, cute signature cocktails, hand crafted bits and pieces for the wedding breakfast tables, swoon-worthy flowers but what really matters is the wedding ceremony. The fact that everyone has been brought together on this day to celebrate two people in love who want their loved ones to witness their public commitment to each other. Some photos from Suzannah and Bobby’s wedding here in August were a great reminder of that point this week. I love this series of photos capturing so completely the emotions in the exchange of vows… Bobby & Suzannah wrote their own vows and this picture of Bobby making his vow to Suzannah shows how many people were watching him speak his heart felt words but looking at his face, it’s just the two of them. This close up shows them totally in their bubble together… But … Continue reading
…I mean cake-wise of course… Wedding cakes without the traditional icing and accompanying sugar craft decorations have come to be known as ‘naked cakes’ and they’ve come a long way. Naked cakes used to be just cakes without icing, something pared down and ‘au naturel’ but they’ve recently taken on a life of their own and can look just as elaborate as the most equisitely iced cake and I’m a big fan. Check out my Pinterest board devoted entirely to the naked cake! Follow Ever After’s board naked wedding cakes on Pinterest. Recent trends have been decorating with flowers, fruit and even a dusting of icing sugar. It can fit with almost any look, theme and feel to a wedding and works particularly well for garden, outdoor and summer weddings. We featured a naked cake in our Eco-Luxe photo shoot here at the venue last year and it remains one of my favourites – so naturally yummy! This chocolate naked … Continue reading
I love Pinterest… Aside from the danger of losing hours (days!) to scrolling through so many gorgeous wedding ideas, it’s a fantastic tool for couples planning their wedding. This is true whether you have a clear idea of exactly what you want and need pics to convey those ideas to suppliers or whether you feel you’re floundering around in a tulle fuzz of whether you should really have a theme, do you need a wedding colour, what about traditions and sinking under so many ‘should haves’. I have 41 wedding related boards on Pinterest (I just surprised myself with that one!) and (as of this minute) 5,688 pins. I told you I loved Pinterest… With autumn now truly announcing its arrival, I thought I’d take a look at one of my favourite boards, The Wedding Dress with Cardis Despite our unpredictable weather you still don’t see many brides wearing a cardi but as you can see from this board, they … Continue reading

In my last blog post about the honeymoon cottage I talked about the idea behind the room, creating space for the bride (or groom) and attendants to get ready in comfort and style with access to everything they might need so a mini salon for hair and make up, a large silver carved dress mirror and space for family and friends to be together to share the excitement of the preparations. Today I wanted to look at some of the other details in the dressing room. There’s a cosy seating area with a wood burning fire and a silver grey linen buttoned sofa. The sofa is also a queen sized sofa bed so some of the bridal party can stay in the honeymoon cottage the night before the wedding. We have space for two more people to sleep in the dressing room. To keep the space as light and airy as possible I have used clear and mirrored furniture … Continue reading
We’re thrilled that we’ve gone live today as one of Rock My Wedding‘s preferred suppliers – yay! Rock My Wedding has a hand picked national online Wedding Directory known as the Love Lust List. Today our entry on the Love Lust List has gone live as a recommended wedding venue in the South West…(did I mention we’re thrilled…?)
I always love Claire Pettibone’s gorgeous wedding dress creations, you can usually spot a Claire Pettibone dress a mile off with its coloured applique detail, beautiful backs and flattering lines. So I was really excited to see the new Autumn 2014 collection which Claire launched at New York Fashion Week recently. And it definitely doesn’t disappoint… I loved the “Still Life” part of the 2014 autumn collection the inspiration for which is swooningly romantic: “In the second half of the 17th century, the art of the floral still-life reached the height of fashion. Dramatic arrangements of flora and fauna, insects and fruits, set against dramatic dark backgrounds exude a mysterious romanticism. The inspiration for this collection quickly led to Dutch masterpiece “Still Life of flowers on a Marble Table”, by Rachel Ruysch, 1716. The brilliance of nature’s beauty is highlighted to dramatic effect, just as the bride becomes the center of our attention. Graceful details adorn delicate silks and laces gilded in gold, glowing as … Continue reading

I packed my bag and got on the road for the Niemierko Academy 2013 summer social held on Friday at Coworth Park, Ascot, part of the Dorchester Collection. Very glam. Of course. Champagne, canapes, tour of the hotel grounds by golf buggy, dinner, overnight stay in a fabulous room… lots of networking with lots of lovely wedding planning people including Mr N himself, the lovely Ruby, Clare Forsyth of Clare Forsyth Events, Mimi and Liesl from Zouch & Lamare, Jessica from Soiree de Luxe, La Toya and Ajay from Sundar Weddings, Jemma Beattie from the Perfect Wedding Company, Aimee from Aimee Dunne, Kirsten Halstead and Claudia Jackson-Bailey from Niermierko And then a long very hot journey back to the fabulous West Country and Ever After for a cooling drink under the shade of my favourite tree…
Those of you who follow us on Pinterest will know that I have a particular penchant for wedding dresses with cardis – I know, but I think they can look gorgeous, not to mention how practical they can be. Let’s not forget the weather isn’t always like it has been this past week… I’ve got a whole Pinterest board on wedding dresses with cardis so do check it out. And you may also know that here at Ever After – A Dartmoor Wedding we like a bit of eco-chic. So I’m thrilled with my latest discovery of a fabulous British company specialising in knitted wedding shrugs and cardis that are so beautiful you will definitely want to take a closer look. They do some gorgeous gossamer-thin shrugs like this: Hand knitted wedding shrug from www.makepiece.com or something more substantial like this: Mohair wedding cape from www.makepiece.com As Makepiece themselves say, “Our sheer shrugs are perfect for summer weddings – for the evening, when the sun … Continue reading
Continuing with the Niemierko Academy at the Dorchester… The other students and I spent the morning in the Penthouse and Pavillion at the Dorchester, first watching a bridal hair and make up demonstration and then after (another fabulous) lunch, watching a fashion show put together for the Academy by Browns of London. Peta Hunt, Editor at Large from You and Your Wedding was there to guide us through the show. I was going to show you some of my iphone photos but fortunately there was a professional on hand to do a proper job! There’s a great little film of Peta talking to Mark Niemierko about the dresses and what’s going on at the moment in wedding dress fashion. Actually I am going to show you a couple of my photos just to brighten up this post but do have a look at the video… Peta Hunt and Mark Niemierko wedding fashion Video Vera Wang, Marchesa Oscar de la Renta, Jenny Packham all featured in the fashion show. This week we did a … Continue reading
So having come down to the earth from the Niemierko wedding planning Academy at the Dorchester, I thought I’d share some more of the amazing experience. Check out this for a pre-wedding spa space: The spa has been recently refurbed in blush pink with pink and cream velvet chairs, tiny tables just perfect for having champagne and little cakes ahead of a wonderfully relaxing treatment in the spa itself. One spectacular feature of the spa is this amazing chandelier: made from 67,000 pearls – wow. What I really wanted to know was who plumps up those gorgeous cushions and do you need special training to make them all ‘just so’?! Then we moved into the Dorchester Bar to taste some wedding cocktails – it’s all part of the wedding planning job… So the first one was a cocktail made with champagne and gold dust: for that extra sparkle on your wedding day – it looked amazing. Then we moved on to … Continue reading
Things have been a little quiet on the blog recently, partly because I have been attending the Niemierko Academy at the Dorchester for wedding planners. One word. Amazing. I learned a lot. Including that even I can only eat so much cake. I have never eaten that much cake in my life…what with a wedding cake tasting at Fortnum and Masons and then tea and cakes every afternoon at the Dorchester, I am ashamed to say that this plate of cakes from last week didn’t get touched. I know! A sin. But that just shows you how much cake there was…And then there was the trip to the Covent Garden Flower Market – my dream place although I would spend all my time gazing at the flowers and not working so maybe not such a good idea. So many beautiful flowers… We were given a tour of the market by the world renowned florist Rob Van Helden who also took us round his work shop and … Continue reading

Today we’re talking to Alison Bradley founder and owner of Kiss Me Cake, a bakery in Devon specialising in hand made cup cakes from the finest ingredients. A great idea for your summer Devon wedding! Click here to take a look at Kiss Me Cake’s website. So Alison what gave you the idea to set up a cup cake business? I set it up whilst working for BBC Magazines in Bristol. My Greek Grandmother taught me how to bake homemade muesli and cakes from a very young age. How did you get started? I started baking muesli and called it ‘Yia Yia’s’ muesli which means ‘grandmother’ in Greek. I used to sell over 50 bags a week to colleagues. After a couple of years I decided to take the plunge and set up a cupcake and bake business called Kiss Me Cake. I baked for weddings, tea parties, birthdays (you name it!) in Bristol for 3 years and then moved to London … Continue reading
