Today over a cup of tea in her Cornish kitchen, Susanne shares with us some stories about how she got started in wedding floristry, other people who inspire her (and about the reindeer)
So Susanne, tell us a bit about how you got started in wedding floristry…
I moved here 8 years ago and after starting in gardening maintenance I did a course at Duchy college. I worked in the nursery there for a few years and then a local farmer told me about the old walled garden in an old manor house that was available to rent. It is still a working farm about a 10 minute walk from here. I started selling vegetables through an honesty box but clearly it wasn’t going to be a big business so flowers started to creep in to the garden and my sales and I got hooked on them! I did a professional floristry course and I knew from that course that I wanted my work to look natural and a bit wild, a bit different – and that has become my style…
So how did you start building your client base when you started out?
I advertised with The Natural Wedding Company and I got so many enquiries through that. I have been super lucky this year when Sarah Falugo from Green Photographic sent a blog from a wedding we worked on together to the hugely popular US blog ‘style me pretty’ and it was featured by them! (here )
So you’ve got to tell us about the reindeer..!
I’m really proud that I did my first styled photoshoot again working with Sarah from Green Photographic. It will be released soon on the reverie blog and I’m really proud of that (since the interview last week, the shoot has been posted here by reverie mag.)
Do you find the internet a good source of inspiration for your work?
Oh yes! There are two particular florists in America whose work I follow online which I couldn’t do without the internet. The first is Saipua in New York whose work I find constantly inspires me and the other is a company in San Francisco called Studio Choo, I actually went to visit them when I went to California a while ago, I just tracked them down!
Check back with us for the second part of our interview with Susanne coming up tomorrow when Susanne shares with us some tips for decorating your wedding venue with flowers…
