A new B&B in Tavistock…

We’ve got lots of fab B&B’s in Tavistock for your wedding guests to stay whilst they’re attending your wedding at Ever After.    We’re happy to provide a list of accommodation which we like and which is covered by our free pick up bus service. We’ve always got our ear to the ground for new accommodation and the other week I popped round to see Janet who with her husband Mark has opened a new B&B on our main pick up route in Tavistock.   For those of you who know Tavistock, the new place is right next door to Tavistock House Hotel on the Plymouth Road. Jan has spent the last year completely renovating this Grade II listed Victoria townhouse, built originally by the Duke of Bedford.   This elegant property now comprises 3 rooms, the penthouse room takes up the entire top floor of the building.  With free standing bath, Molton Brown toiletries and towels from The White … Continue reading

Wedding guest accommodation…

We’re not a hotel so we don’t have a lot of guest accommodation on site here at the venue.   We have our fabulous honeymoon cottage of course – there are not many venues where you get your own house, all to yourself and designed exclusively for newly weds.   In case you need a reminder this is the cottage: We have a huge amount of accommodation nearby for your wedding guests to make their own choice.   From top of the range country house hotels to boutique B&B’s through to self-catering and camping – there’s something nearby to suit all budgets. So when we found out that the lovely Bryony & Bertie who own Cider House B&B, (one of the only luxury B&B’s in the heart of a National Trust historic property)  have added a couple of super-luxe shepherd’s huts to their accommodation, we wanted to know more.   Bryony & Bertie believe in providing the best of the … Continue reading

Our look at 2017 wedding trends – part 3…

Continuing our look at the most talked-about 2017 wedding trends (for part 1 click here and for part 2 click here).   This week we thought we’d highlight one of the other trend forecast by our friends over at Coco Wedding Venues. Minimalist Luxe. Katrina Otter describes this on the Coco Wedding trend report as “stripping things back without scrimping on luxury or the overall style and vibe.”   Yep, love that.   Here we often add to the natural elements and surroundings with metallic vases and candle holders to keep things simple but luxurious as in this cake table display where the simplicity of the cake design is complemented by the sparkling touches of the tea lights and flowers. This cheese cake arrangement on one of our log slices uses an abundance of fruit with oversized lanterns and a bridesmaid’s bouquet, all against a foliage backdrop to create a feeling of luxe with simplicity. And this semi-naked cake, simply decorated … Continue reading

A look back at some of our 2016 summer weddings….

As we look forward to another fabulous summer wedding season here at Ever After in 2017, I’m looking back at a selection of our 2016 weddings, some planning highlights and some of the suppliers involved.   It’s also a chance to share some photos from each of the weddings which haven’t been seen before. The first wedding of the 2016 summer season was Philippa and John who got married on the first Saturday in May.   The day was planned around a church wedding, Philippa got ready in the honeymoon cottage with her two daughters as flower girls.   Colours for the day were white, blush pink and gold with the men dressed in tweed and decor items of rustic accents and natural colours.   Jodie of The Hair Lounge Tavistock and Jess of No 5 Aesthetics came to the venue to help Philippa get ready for her church wedding. The rain held off for Philippa leaving from the venue for the … Continue reading

Our look at 2017 wedding trends – part 2

Last week we started our look at the most talked-about 2017 wedding trends (for part 1 click here).   This week we thought we’d highlight a few of the other trends forecast by our friends over at Coco Wedding Venues. Starting with shades of nude.   We saw some of these here last year in bridal gowns, bridesmaids dresses, flowers, cakes and table settings.  Carrying over a colour into all aspects of the wedding style creates a coherent look that seems effortless (but isn’t!). These nude bridesmaids’ gown from Georgia & Lee’s wedding make a big contribution to the colour.   And don’t forget the groom and his guys, the pale grey groomsmen’s suits from Charlotte & Luke’s wedding make an impact too. Nudes and neutrals can be carried through from dress through to flowers and other accessories such as shoes and sandles.    Mis-matched bridesmaids’ and flower girl dresses give you a wide choice of colours and textures and … Continue reading

Coco Wedding Venues 2017 wedding trend predictions…

We’re proud to feature on the directory of Coco Wedding Venues, the uber stylish wedding venue finder run by the lovely Emma, we’ve been listed with Coco since they first started 3 years ago and we’ve been featured a number of times, including just yesterday with our elopement weddings.    You can read some of the pieces here and here. In this year’s annual wedding 2017 trend report featured on her blog, Emma talks about what you might be seeing for next year’s weddings.    I am totally with Emma that the point of wedding trends is not to blindly follow fashion but of course weddings are influenced by fashions of the day.  I think it’s part of the charm of wedding photos that when you look at most of them you can tell which decade it took place.   A 1940’s wedding looks of its time as does one from the 1960’s or 70’s.   So trends and fashions … Continue reading

The wedding experience of a 2016 Ever After bride…

Vicki & Jon were our last wedding of the season and what a great wedding to end a wonderful summer! Following a super emotional wedding ceremony in the barn, Vicki & Jon had a reception on the lawns and the rain held off until all the guests were dining in the wedding marquee. The biblical rain didn’t stop the boys heading to the riverwalk for a whiskey & cigar shot by the fire globe, albeit under brollies! Vicki has been kind enough to share her experience of the planning year, her memories of the day and she has some tips for couples planning their own wedding.    So here is what she has to say… How did you find us? Jon and I had been searching for venues in our local area (Buckinghamshire) and didn’t find anything that jumped out at either of us! We weren’t being overly pro-active with the searching process, after visiting a few and feeling quite … Continue reading

Make time for couple shots…

I was talking to a wedding photographer recently and she was saying how important it is for a couple to make time for some couple portraits on their wedding day.   It got me thinking… I hear from couples in the run up to their wedding day about how they don’t want to abandon their guests during the drinks reception by having couple photos.   I thought the same myself when the lovely S and I got married here back in 2012.   Trouble is, we don’t have any couple shots!   And although I’m not a great one for having photos of myself around the house, it would be kinda nice to have some of the lovely S and I in our wedding finery.   So much so that I’m thinking of an anniversary shoot for the two of us one day here at the venue, but I digress… Back to the subject in hand, ‘abandoning’ your guests for … Continue reading

Let there be light(ing)…

The gardens and grounds here at Ever After make this a beautiful place to be married.   And then it gets dark.   And when the lights come up, the venue is transformed. We have lots of different forms of lighting from festoon lights, fairy light canopies, steel lanterns, garden uplighters, light up furniture to tea lights and candles. This year we’ve purchased a new fairy light canopy for the wedding barn and we’ve also bought our own fairy light canopy for the marquee which previously couples used to hire in.    We’ve always had the disco lights for the marquee and our white starlight dance floor which are great for evening music and dancing.   I’ll post some pics of the wedding barn canopy as soon as it goes up. We’ve also bought some new festoon lights with white lanterns which again couples used to hire in.  They’re now available free of charge so there’ll be plenty of opportunity … Continue reading

Yes you can plan a wedding in 3 months…

You may have seen one of our real 2015 weddings featured in the brand new edition of Wed Magazine this week.    Jess and Chris got married here at Ever After in June last year.   Although they live in London, Jess had strong family connections to this part of Devon and a Dartmoor wedding was a must for them.   Jess and her sister actually used to ride past the venue as children so it was the perfect venue choice for Jess and Chris. I thought I’d show a few more of the photos of this wedding taken by the lovely Dan Ward as a story of the day.  It all starts in the morning with getting ready photos, the preparations are an important part as the excitement builds.   Hair and make up were by local stylists Sisters Hair and Beauty. Jess’s something blue were her gorgeous blue suede shoes which made a real impact with her made to … Continue reading

So you’re engaged part 3…

The guest list… Oh the guest list… It’s the part of wedding planning that I hear couples agonise over most.   It’s one of the most important days of your life so you want to invite everyone who’s important right?   Some of it’s easy like close family and friends. And then it gets tricky… Children…? Relatives you haven’t seen for a while…? Relatives you’ve never met…? The new other half of your best friend…? The person who invited you to their wedding…? Friends of your parents…? There’s no getting round it, most guest lists are difficult.   There are so many people to please.   Try to find a way to accept that it will be hard (make that impossible) to please everyone.   It cannot be done.   So the only thing you can do is try to manage the list with grace and kindness. You may need to make some phone calls to explain that numbers are … Continue reading

So you’re engaged part 2…

Yesterday we looked on the blog at what to do when you’ve just got engaged and you’re wondering where to start on planning your wedding.    Yesterday’s post looked at setting a budget and discussing financial contributions with family. Having set a draft budget, the next thing to think about is the date… Have you got a specific date in mind?   If a particular date is important to you for some reason, you need to make sure you give yourselves enough time to book your venue.    We are almost fully booked for 2016 (we have one Saturday left), most of our enquiries are for 2017 and we have only one Saturday left for June 2017.   We’re taking bookings for 2018 and we’ve got enquiries about 2019. The point I’m making is venues get booked up in advance.   WAY in advance.   If you’re flexible with your date, you’ll probably find a suitable venue even at fairly … Continue reading

So you’re engaged!

If you’re a brand newly engaged person – congratulations! Christmas and New Year are some of the most popular times of the whole year to get engaged. Where do you start?   It’s easy to start researching madly online looking at venues, frocks, cute decor ideas, flowers, cakes, cocktails, bands – you never knew a wedding required so much organisation! At the end of a few days you’re overwhelmed, you thought you wanted one kind of wedding, now it seems like you want another and before you know it, you have no idea where to start.   Sound familiar..? There are plenty of things to think about and some of the most important are when and where?   But before you can even think about that you have to think about budget.   Get yourself a spreadsheet (you need to get serious about wedding planning!) and start sketching out how much you think you want to spend.    Are your … Continue reading

Don’t forget your invite…

Photographs are the most important way for you to permanently capture your wedding day for the rest of your lives. I noticed this year that for the most part couples didn’t bring their wedding stationery (or papercraft) with them on the day which means it doesn’t form part of your official wedding photographs.   That’s a shame because most people spend a lot a time making sure their stationery fits in with the style for the rest of the day and whether you spend hours DIYing your stationery suite or working with a bespoke designer, that planning forms an important part of your memories of the day. Take a look at these pins on our stationery pinterest board and you’ll see how great a stationery set can look when photographed by a professional: Follow Ever After’s board Wedding papercraft on Pinterest. If you’re interested in having your wedding published in a wedding magazine or blog, they will definitely want to … Continue reading

A new addition to our decor range…

Yesterday the lovely S and I took a road trip.   Not one of those Hollywood trekking across America in a Mustang road trips (I wish!) but down to Poole to pick up a new (for us) vintage hand cart for our couples to use at their weddings here. Having checked that we could actually fit the cart onto our trusty trailer, we drove down and loved it on sight! S loaded it onto the trailer, roped it on and off we went back home with our lovely new acquisition.   The trailer had been used by local builders R Short of Upton, Poole, Dorset. There was a painted wooden sign in the cart with the builders name and phone number, “Phone Lychett Minster 365” which matches the signwriting at the end of the cart. The cart is probably Victorian and although we don’t know much about its origins, we’re looking forward to putting it to new uses here for … Continue reading

A new addition to our accommodation list…

We’re thrilled that a new mini hotel has opened up here in Tavistock.   It’s the Tavistock House Hotel and we’ve added it straight on to our accommodation list.   Of course it helps that we had a heads up on this new facility from Tony at Rockmount B&B in Tavistock as he’s related to Bradley, one half of the couple who bought and painstakingly renovated the Tavistock House Hotel. This is a family owned Grade II Listed Townhouse in the middle of Tavistock.  The hotel is newly opened and features individually designed rooms with a contemporary feel. I popped down last week to take a look for myself and meet Bradley, one of the owners.  Over a pot of tea and fab freshly made scones he told me about his life’s work in hotels and his dream to create his own small quality town hotel.   As you can see from these photos, he’s definitely achieved that! All the rooms … Continue reading

Putting ourselves to the Brides Magazine dream venue test

In the Jan/Feb edition of Bride’s magazine they’re including a handy wedding planner with 160 pages of ideas and advice. Their article ‘Now, Let’s Lock Down that Dream Venue‘ includes a list of the 6 questions you must ask your venue before you book. So we thought we’d put ourselves to the Bride’s Magazine test and see how we fare… Am I likely to bump into other brides at the venue? Definitely not!   We offer exclusive use to all our couples.   We guarantee not to hold another wedding on the same day as yours.   We also guarantee not to hold another wedding the day before yours or the day after so that nobody (including us!) feels rushed. What’s your minimum guest allowance? We don’t have a minimum guest allowance but there is a minimum hire fee which is £6,000 including VAT.   If you want to have a smaller wedding and you’re happy to pay the hire … Continue reading

Wedding trends 2015 part 5: sequins

Love My Dress, Sarah Dawson of Perfect Wedding, The Cake Blog and The Knot are all talking about sequins as a wedding trend for 2015. Sequins are a great way of adding a touch of glamour and sparkle to any wedding and you can use as much or as little as you like according to your own taste. Adding sequins to your bridesmaids dresses is an easy way of bringing in the sequins and will certainly let your bridesmaids stand out on the day. I particularly loved the bridesmaids in the mix and match skirts and sequin tops above, they bring in two trends in one, metallics AND sequins. You can also use sequins in other aspects of your wedding decor, table cloths or table runners are a way of bringing the sparkle to your table settings.   And of course there’s the bridal frock to scatter with sequins.   With designers such as Jenny Packham and Temperley Bridal having sequins as part … Continue reading

Wedding trends 2015 – part 4: Colours

In our continuing look at the predicted wedding trends of 2015 (you can read part 1, part 2 and part 3 here), today we’re looking at trending colours. When it comes to picking colours for your wedding, start with what you love.   If there’s a colour you’ve always favoured, use it whether it’s in vogue or not, it’s your wedding and you should use the colours you feel good in and comfortable with. Looking at trends can help bring a bit of extra style and freshness to your day, you could use the trend colour as an accent rather than a main colour if you prefer. Quite a few spotters are talking about metallics and in particular copper when it comes to 2015 wedding trends.  Using silver and gold accents is a great way to add a touch of luxe to your wedding look and has been used in all kinds of ways from dress embellishments to table decorations … Continue reading

2015 Wedding Trends – part 2

In my last post I looked at the point of wedding trends.   One benefit of wedding trend chatter is it can provide a focus when you’re feeling overwhelmed by so much PRETTY STUFF and you want to have it all but then what would that look like..? I’m not talking about wedding themes although they can be great fun if you have something personal to you as a couple.  I’m talking about trying to nail down the overall look and feel of the day, the style.   Because style isn’t just there for it’s own sake, it creates an atmosphere, it affects the mood of your guests, it’s the thing that makes guests say, ‘oh it just fitted you perfectly as a couple’ – that’s what you’re looking for when you’re seeking out your wedding style. So in trawling through all the various ideas and trends, you’re looking for what speaks to YOU, what do you love and why … Continue reading

Wedding trends part 1- love them or hate them?

It’s the start of a New Year so there is a lot of advice coming through about what the 2015 wedding trends are. I love reading them – some stuff I love, some stuff well, not so much.  But what about wedding trends – what’s the point of them and does it make you a fashion victim if you follow them? I find blogs and articles about future trends inspiring, it shows me things I may not have considered before, things I would never have dreamed of, maybe even challenges some prejudices I might be holding.   It reminds me that each wedding can be different and can be a surprise and delight for guests as they come together to celebrate this special day for the couple. Some people can be dismissive of trends and fashions for weddings but for hundreds of years weddings have followed fashion.   If you look at most wedding photos, you can usually take a … Continue reading

What weddings are really about…

I love weddings, that’s why I love my job… And yes I love all the wedding details, fabulous food, cute signature cocktails, hand crafted bits and pieces for the wedding breakfast tables, swoon-worthy flowers but what really matters is the wedding ceremony.   The fact that everyone has been brought together on this day to celebrate two people in love who want their loved ones to witness their public commitment to each other. Some photos from Suzannah and Bobby’s wedding here in August were a great reminder of that point this week.   I love this series of photos capturing so completely the emotions in the exchange of vows… Bobby & Suzannah wrote their own vows and this picture of Bobby making his vow to Suzannah shows how many people were watching him speak his heart felt words but looking at his face, it’s just the two of them. This close up shows them totally in their bubble together… But … Continue reading

Insider secrets on wedding floristry from The Blue Carrot

The second part of our interview with Susanne Hatwood of The Blue Carrot, wedding florist. Click here to visit Susanne’s website  So Susanne, today I wanted to talk to you about working with couples on their wedding flowers.   What do you think attracts couples to your business? I think part of my success is that I’m very passionate about my work and that comes across to people.  But it’s not just the flowers it’s also dealing with a small cottage industry and people like that. How important is it to have a good working relationship with couples? Once I start a consultation I can tell really quickly whether I can work with a couple.   Sometimes you can become good friends with your clients and who could want more than that!   The relationship usually starts through email but I always try to meet in person if I can.  I have had brides who live abroad who maybe I don’t meet until the day … Continue reading

3 questions for your dream candlelit wedding…

So you’ve decided to have your dream candlelit wedding ceremony.   In England, that’s a new thing so there will be things to consider you may not have thought of… How late? Here in Devon you can now get married up to and including midnight.    A midnight ceremony sounds romantic but what effect will it have on your wedding day? will all your wedding photographs be taken in the dark? how late can you serve a sit down meal? do your guests want to wait til after midnight to start the celebrations? Photographs in the dark Is midnight too late?   Could you get married at 7 pm or even 9 pm when in England it’s still light in high summer.   Make sure you tell your photographer that your ceremony will be in the evening so they can consider whether they need to bring extra lighting equipment with them. If you get married in the early evening, you could still have beautiful photographs taken in … Continue reading

Want to get married by candlelight? A change in the law last month means that you can…

A wedding by candlelight…so romantic. The law in England meant that couples could only get married between sunrise and sunset, in practice that meant between 8 am and 6 pm.    My friends in the States have always been disbelieving that you couldn’t choose to have an evening ceremony in this country.   Well now you can.  A change in the law last month (October 2012) means that County Councils have the right to make their own rules and extend the times during which they will supply their Registrars for marriage ceremonies. Here in Devon, the Council has extended the ceremony times up to and including midnight so a candlelit wedding is now a possibility.   Not all County Councils and not all venues will offer this service so you need to check with your own Council and your own venue.     We’re going to be doing a series of articles about evening weddings looking at: are there any … Continue reading
